I know Devanagari but I never noticed this typo., never until I dug this story. Its a zig saw puzzle , with “wi” written all over its block with different languages Wikipedia supporting in their own script. NYTimes said “this time, however, they are not examples of vandalism at the user-created site but typographical errors in Wikipedia’s own logo.”. They noticed Sanskrit “wi” in Devanagari script. Someone else complained its Japaneses Katakana script is wrong too.

Well well well , its Kannada script is wrong too. They have written some similar “wi” symbol (yet strange ) in kannada. In Sanskrit logo symbol reads “rwa” (as in Nirwana ), but in Kannada it does not make sence at all.

I dont have much of complaint, when they screwed Kannada’s mother Sanskrit itself- Kannada is what big deal.

Dear Wikipedia , in case you planned to repair your globe , change Kannada “Wi” too. Also just turn your zig saw puzzle , you might get more

ಪೂಚಂತೇಯವರ ಮೊದಲ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ನಾನು ಓದಿದ್ದು “ಕರ್ವಲೋ”. ಆಗ ನಾನಿನ್ನೂ ಚಿಕ್ಕ ಹುಡುಗ, ಐದ್ನೇ ಕ್ಲಾಸಲ್ಲಿದ್ದೆ. ಹೈಸ್ಕೂಲಿನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಅಣ್ಣನಿಗೆ ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಬಹುಮಾನವಾಗಿ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ರು ( ತಟ್ಟೆ ಪ್ಲೇಟು ಬಹುಮಾನವಾಗಿ ಕೊಡೋ ಪದ್ದತಿ ಆ ಸ್ಕೂಲಿನಲ್ಲಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ). ನನಗೆ ಅದು ದೆವ್ವ ಭೂತಗಳ ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ಒದೋ ಕಾಲ ( ಅರೇಬಿಯನ್ ನೈಟ್ಸ್, ವಿಕ್ತ್ರಮ ಬೆತಾಳನ ಕಥೆಗಳು ). “ಕರ್ವಲೊ” ಕೇಳೊಕೆ ಹೆಸರು ವಿಚಿತ್ರವಾಗಿತ್ತು , ಕೇಳಿದ್ರೆ ” ಕರ್ವಲೊ ಅಂತ ಒಬ್ಬ ವಿಜ್ನಾನಿ , ಅವರೂ ಮತ್ತೆ ಕೆಲವರೂ ಹಾರೋ ಉಡದ ಹಿಂದೆ ಹೋಗೊ ಕಥೆ”.

ಹಾಗೊ ಹೀಗೊ ಮುಗಿಸಿದೆ … ಹೀರೋ ಭೂತದ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಫೈಟಿಂಗ್ ಮಾಡ್ಲಿಲ್ಲ ಅಂತ ಸೊಲ್ಪ ಬೇಜರಾಯ್ತು. ಕ್ಲಾಸಿಕ್ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳೇನೆಂದರೆ ಐಡಿಯಾನೇ ಇರ್ಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಶಾಲೆಯ ಗಣಿತ ಪುಸ್ತಕಕ್ಕಿಂತಲೂ ದಪ್ಪದ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಿಬಿಟ್ಟೆ ಎಂಬ ಹೆಮ್ಮೆ ಅಶ್ಟೇ. ಅರ್ಥ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಿ “ಸುರಂಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಮಾಧಿ” ಓದೋ ಕಾಲ ಅದು. ಕತ್ತೆಗೇನು ಗೊತ್ತು ಕಸ್ತೋರಿ ಗಂಧ. ಮುಂದಿನ ನಾಲ್ಕೈದು ವರ್ಷಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಏಳೆಂಟು ಸಲ ಓದಿ ಜಸ್ಟಿಸ್ ಕೊಟ್ಟೆ ಪುಸ್ತಕಕ್ಕೆ.

ಮುಂದಿನ ವರ್ಷ ಅಣ್ಣ “ಶಿವನಿಪಳ್ಳಿಯ ಕಪ್ಪು ಚಿರತೆ” ತಂದ, ಬಹುಮಾನವಾಗಿ. “ಕೆನ್ನೆತ್ ಆಂಡರ್ಸನ್” ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ್ಯಪೂರ್ವ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇಟೆಯಾಡಿದ ನರಭಕ್ಷಕ ಚಿರತೆ ಹುಲಿಗಳ ಕಥೆಗಳು. ನನ್ನ್ನ ಪೋಚಂತೇ ಅನುವಾದ. ಪುಟಪುಟವೂ ರೊಮಾಂಚಕವಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಆಂಡರ್ಸನ್ ಯಾರೋ ಕೇಳಿ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ , ತೇಜಸ್ವಿಯಂತೂ ಒಂದುವರ್ಷದಿಂದ ಪರಿಚಯ. ಸೊ.. ಇನ್ನೂ “ಶಿವನಿಪಳ್ಲಿ..” ಬೇಟೆಯಾಟ ನೋಡಿದ್ರೆ ತೇಜಸ್ವಿ ಬೇಟೆಗಳೇ ನೆನಪಾಗುತ್ತೆ.

ಮಧ್ಯದಲೊಮ್ಮೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಹಳ್ಳಿ ಪೊಲೀಸ್ ಮಾಮನಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಡಿ ಬೇಡಿ ಅವರ ಕಲೆಕ್ಶನ್ನಿಂದ ‘ಮಿಸ್ಸಿಂಗ್ ಲಿಂಕ್” ಓದಿದ್ದೆ. “ನಿಯಾಂಡರ್ತಲ್ , ಕ್ರೊ – ಮ್ಯಾಗ್ನನ್” ಮನುಷ್ಯರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದ್ರು ತೇಜಸ್ವಿ.

ಮುಂದಿನ ವರ್ಷ ನನ್ನ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆ ಉರಿಸೊಕ್ಕೆ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಬಂತು. ನಾನಿನ್ನೂ ತಟ್ಟೆ ಪ್ಲೇಟು ಬಹುಮಾನ ಕೊಡುವ ಸ್ಕೂಲ್ನಲ್ಲೇ ಓದುತಿದ್ದೆ. “ಪರಿಸರದ ಕಥೆಗಳು” ಅದ್ಭುತವಾದ ಪುಸ್ತಕ. ನನಗಿನ್ನೂ ತೇಜಸ್ವಿ ಅಂದ್ರೆ “ಪರಿಸರದ ಕಥೆಗಳು” … ಬಂದೂಕು ಬೆನ್ನಿಗೇರಿಸಿ , ಪ್ಯಾರ , ಮಾರ ( ಇನ್ನೂರೈವತ್ತು ವರ್ಷದ ಹುಡುಗ ) ಮತ್ತು ಕಿವಿ ( ಬೇಟೆ ನಾಯಿ ) ಜೊತೆ ಕಾಡು ಮೇಡುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತಿರುಗಾಡಿ ಪರಿಸರದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಬರೆದ ಸಾಹಿತಿ. ಸುಷ್ಮಿತಾಗೆ ಹಕ್ಕಿಮರಿ ಪಾಟ ಹೇಳಿ , ಊರ ಮೇಸ್ತ್ರಿ ಜೊತೆ ಜಗಳ ಮಾಡೊ ಈ ಯುವಕ ಇನ್ನಿಲ್ಲ ಅಂದ್ರೆ ಹೇಗೆ ತಾನೆ ವಿಶ್ವಾಸ ಮಾಡ್ಲಿ. ಪರಿಸರದ ಕಥೆಗಳು ಯಾವ ಜಮಾನಾದ್ದು ಅಂತ ಯಾವಾಗ್ಲೂ ರೀಸರ್ಚ್ ಮಾಡ್ಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಎಪ್ಪತ್ತು ವರ್ಷದ ಸಾಹಿತಿ ಅಂತ ನ್ಯೂಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಿದ್ದೆ, ಯಾಕೋ ಬೇಜಾರಾಯ್ತು… ಬದುಕಿದ್ದಾಗ ಒಮ್ಮೆನೂ ಭೆಟ್ಟಿಯಾಗ್ಲಿಲ್ಲವಲ್ಲ ಅಂತ.

ಆ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದಿದ್ಮೇಲೆ ತಂದೆ ತಾಯಿಯಿಂದ ಸಾಕಶ್ತೂ ಬೈಸಿಕೊಂದಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಕಾಡು ಹಂದಿ ಹುಡುಕಿ ಬೆಟ್ಟಕಾಡು ( ಚಿಕ್ಕವುಗಳು ) ಓಡಾಡಿ ಅಂಗಿ ಚಡ್ಡಿ ಹರ್ಕೋಂಡು , ನಾಲ್ಕೈದು ಪರ್ಸೆಂಟ್ ಮೆಲನಿನ್ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಮಾಡ್ಕೊಂಡು ಬಂದ್ರೆ ಯಾರಿಗೆ ತಾನೆ ಖುಶಿಯಾಗುತ್ತೆ. ನಾನೂ ನನ್ ಪಟಾಲಂ ನಾಮಗೋಳಿಗಳೂ, ಜಕಾನಾ ( ಪೂಚಂತೇ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲೇ ಓದಿದ್ದು , ಈ ತನಕ ನೋಡಿಲ್ಲ ) ಹಳ್ಳ ಕೆರೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಡುಕಾಡಿದ್ದು, ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಯಾವುದೊ ಮೀನುಗಳನ್ನು ಜೀವಂತ ಹಿಡಿದು ವಟಾರದ ಬಾವಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಿಟ್ಟದ್ದು , ನಿಮ್ಮ ಬಾವಿ ಕ್ಲೀನ್ ಆಗುತ್ತೆ ಅಂತ ಆಶೀರ್ವಾದ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದು … ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪೂರ್ಣಚಂದ್ರ ತೇಜಸ್ವಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಪ್ರಭಾವನೇ.

“ಜುಗಾರಿ ಕ್ರಾಸ್ “  ಕೊಂಡು ಓದಿದ ಪುಸ್ತಕ. ಆದ್ರೆ ಅವು ಮನಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಉಳಿಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಹೈ ಸ್ಕೂಲ್ ಮುಗಿದ್ಮೇಲೆ ಕನ್ನಡ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದೋ ಅವಕಾಶ ಸಿಗ್ಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಇದ್ದ ಬಿದ್ದ ಟೈಮ್ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಇಂಬ್ಳಿಸು ಒದಕ್ಕೇ ಆಗೋಯ್ತು. ಕನ್ನಡ ಮೀಡಿಯಂ ಕೋತಿಯೊಬ್ಬ ಇಂಬ್ಳೀಸು ಲೈಫಿಗೆ ಅಡ್ಜುಸ್ಟು ಆಗ್ಬೇಕಲ್ಲ.

One among them is “Kahlil Gibran” collection of his greatest works. To be specific “the prophet “among them. It doesn’t have123 pages, so here is the last page. Please don’t ask me what about it, I dint reach there yet.

The second book I am reading is a Kannada book. Its National academy award winner Bandaya (means rebel) by Vyasaraya Ballala. It’s one of my all time favorites and I have read it at least ten times. Still love to read it. Its about Lal-zhanda-zamana ( red flag era ) of mumbai.

Nobody needs to teach Indian hypocrisy and stereotyping; it’s a gift in their blood. We love to laugh at another person’s mole on his nose, while we are standing in a pit full of cow dung. South Indians disliking north Indians, North Indians don’t like south Indians and both together dislike north-east Indians. In fact North-east Indians itself is new usage, for the rest of India they are just “Chinkis”. It’s not racist, just sense of humor.

One more thing common among all of them is “my daddy … Strooongest!!!’. We have the best culture, language, community and nature; we are best analyzers, psychologists and of course rest of them live in a fish pond. Those people don’t like Mohanlal to be hero in this age are O.K with Rishi Kapur dancing with girl of his grand daughter’s age. We are O.K with Salman Khan’s pink trouser but Vijaykanth’s yellow shirt is so funny.

One of the most general and popular “happy to be ignorant” story is about a place called Madras in India. People live there are madarassis. For south Indians it is one metropolitan city which is now named as Chennai. But unfortunately for north Indians it is a wide unexplored area comes in south to Maharashtra and Orissa. (For north east Indians it does not matter. Geographically south India has four different states and six to seven different languages, for north Indians it is just madras. The rest of the India thinks whole madras speaks one language Tamil and they survive with Idly Sambar Vada. We made a big deal when Celebrity big brother’s sister did not learn Shilpa’s name isn’t it?

Knowing Hindi is one more misconception around. People worried why rest of the world not bothered learn Hindi. Well why should they? States are organized as linguistic regions. Every state has its own language; they are official and national language as Hindi. Why complain people over there don’t understand my language?

This kind of assumptions and misconceptions works other way round also. Kashmiri’s don’t love India, Bengali’s don’t take bath, Assamee’s are extremists etc. Generally this or any of such issues are fought in mails and posts. One starts and there will be avalanche of mails/comments, cause it’s easy to write offending mails/posts.

This post ( This is Indian Racism) I can mention here is a person who is pissed off with the terrorism panic in Bangalore. People of North Indian origin is asked to register details in nearby police station (to be sure he has no records) and this guy goes Fs ad Bs. There was an analysis and it was found any of south Indians did not participate in freedom fights.

Now my message to those living out in their ponds like the frogs who never knew what it is like being outside….

You guys ever knew how a war is fought (65, 71, Kargil )? None from South Indian community was ever engaged in Struggle for Freedom

The stupids of North India fight for India, die for India and u guys say they all are terrorists and you are different coz they are Northies. huh!!! Thanklessness Personified!!!! God forbid, if anything like Tsunami occurs again, from North Indian people’s side, nothing will change. These Pseudo Indians will ask for Rice from North Indians. And then we North Indians will donate it and don’t worry we will not poison it then.

Grow up you South Indians…I wish u cud…

Strange analyses and may be it explains lot of things. Biharis getting kicked in Assam can be argued right back since Battle of Plassy ( seventeen hundreds I guess ), don’t ask me connection . And of course why marathi’s hate kannadiga’s in belagam ( currently Belagavi I guess ) is because kannadiga’s did not fight for Shivaji against Aurangazeb five hundred years back. May be they did but that is not a point.

One mails also I want to mention here. Some techie living in Chennai, has lot of complaints. Some of them may be valid, the others I tried to answer here (and send him a link to this post )

Language – Tamil, Tamil and Tamil. Even if they know Hindi, they dont speak up.

Aren’t there any place where India where Hindi Hindi and only Hindi , or Bengali Bengali and only Bengali ? When you are not learning a local language when you are living in it , why are you expecting them to learn a language which is rarely used in their town. and about “even if they know Hindi they dont speak is highly exaggerated. There are some proud , conservative people but they are exceptional cases. Why would an auto driver or a cigarette shop owner ( Most of the time you interact with only these ) does not talk to you in Hindi ( even if he knows ) . There is life he has and he needs to earn to live.

Food – Idly, sambhar, rice, dosa, vada, pongal We have to cook our food ourselves (unbelievable naa). “Even dogs eat curd rice ,”

Once we saw a girl in the food court, she was looking and acting like a north Indian. My friend became exited and planned to talk to her, but just then we noticed her breakfast and then “dil ke armaan aansuon mein beh gaye”, she was having pongal. (disguise!!)

What about places where only roti, naan, alu parantha? Dude what will you do if you go to Italy ? eat pizza / pasta or complain that you don’t get Tanduri items

We asked an auto driver, “Hindi aati hai”?. He replied in Hindi “Hindi nahi aati”.

At least that. If a tamilian comes to Delhi or Mumbai and asks “Tamil terima ?/kannada barutta ” will he reply as ” teriyad/gottila ” . He will say ” go to hell / bhad me jao ” isn’t it ?

The most common suffix here is ‘a’, e.g. straight – straighta 2 cup tea – 2 cupa tea

When there is a ‘t’ in any name, they add ‘h’ to it. jayant – jayanth bharat – bharath . Here is a culture of adding mystical alphabets after ones’s name, like Mahesh R, Sandeep T etc.

Weather - summer from October to feb and rest of the year it’s deadly summer.
Cable connection is of no use here as only tamil channels are broadcasted on cable TV, if anyone wanna watch hindi channels then you need to buy a set up box (Rs.4000).

People – We never heard anyone laughing here (I wonder if they ever laugh or shout) So conservative, that noone talks even in the bus

`ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಬ್ಲಾಗು ಮಾಡೋದು ತುಂಬಾ ಕಷ್ಟ, ಒಂದು post ಮಾಡ್ಬೇಕಿದ್ರೊ comment ಬರೀಬೇಕಿದ್ರೊ ಬರೆದು ಅಳಿಸಿ ಬರೆದು ಅಳಿಸಿ ಬಟ್ಟೆ ಹರ್ಕೊಂಡು ಒದ್ದಾಡಿದ್ರೂ ಅಲ್ಲೊಂದು ಇಲ್ಲೊಂದು ಕೀಗುಣಿತ. ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ translitration ಮಾಡುವ ಸರ್ವೀಸೇ ಬಂದಿಲ್ಲ. ಈಗಿರುವ ಸರ್ವೀಸುಗಳು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಅನುವಾದನೇ ಮಾಡೋದಿಲ್ಲ. “ಬರಹ” ಎನೊ ಚನ್ನಾಗಿದೆ ಆದ್ರೇ ನಾವೀಗ web2.0 ನಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಿವಿ ತಾನೇ , install ಮಡೊದು ಹಳೆ ಜಮಾನ, ಈಗೇಲ್ಲಾ writing, reading, bookmarking, sharing ಎಲ್ಲಾನೂ on-line . ಮನೆಲೇನೋ ಸರಿ ಆದೆ officeನಲ್ಲಿ install ಮಾಡ್ಬೇಕು ಅಂತ ಕೂತ್ರೇ ನೇರವಾಗಿ ಮನೆಗೆ ಕಳಿಸ್ತಾರೆ. ಮತ್ತು ಏನೇನೋ ಸಮಸ್ಯೇಗಳು. ಕೆಲವು ಪುಟಗಳಲ್ಲಿ font ಓದಕ್ಕೇ ಆಗದಿದ್ದ್ರೇ , ಕೆಲವು URL ಓದಕ್ಕೇ ಅಗೋದಿಲ್ಲ bookmark ಮಾಡೋಣ ಅಂದ್ರೆ .

ಅಮೇರಿಕಾದ ಗೆಳೆಯನೊಬ್ಬ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಭಾಷೆಗಳ web2.0 site ಶುರು ಮಾಡ್ತೀನಿ ಅಂದಿದ್ದ. ಅಲ್ಲೇ ಬರೆದು, save ಮಾಡಿ , ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದಲೇ ಬ್ಲಾಗಿಗೆ ಕಳಿಸೊದು , posting ಏಶ್ಟು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿರೋತ್ತೆ ಅಲ್ವಾ. ನೋಡ್ಬೇಕು ಹೇಗಿರುತ್ತೆ ಅಂತ.

“ಭಾಷೆ” ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ವಿಷಯ. ಬ್ಲಾಗು ಅಂದ್ರೆ ತುಂಬಾ casual ಆಗಿ ಬರೀಬೇಕು, ಇದು ದಿನಪತ್ರಿಕೆ ಅಲ್ಲ ನೋಡಿ. ಆದ್ರೇ ಕನ್ನಡ ಭಾಷೆಯೇ ಹಾಗೆ, ಬರೆಯೋಕೇ ಒಂದು, ಮಾತಾಡೋಕೇ ಸಾವಿರ ಡಯಲೇಕ್ಟುಗಳು. ಸೀರಿಯಸ್ಸಾಗಿ ಬರೆದ್ರೇ ತುಂಬಾ ಬೋರು , casualಲಾಗಿ ಬರೆದ್ರೇ ತುಂಬಾ ವಿಚಿತ್ರ. ಒಂದು ವಾಕ್ಯ ನೋಡಿ ” ಎಷ್ಟು ಸುಂದರ ಹುಡುಗಿ ಹೋಗ್ತಾ ಇದ್ದಾಳೆ ನೋಡಿ” ಎನ್ನುವುದನ್ನೇ ” ನೋಡ್ಲಾ ಮಗಾ.. ಎಂತಾ figure ಹೋಗ್ತವ್ಳೇ…” ಇಲ್ಲಾ “ನೋಡಿ ಮಾರಾಯರೇ , ಎಂತಾ ಚೆಂದವಾದ ಹೆಣ್ಣು ಹೋಗುತ್ತಾ ಇದ್ದಾಳೆ”.

ಮತ್ತೊಂದು ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ ದಿನಬಳಕೆಯ ಅರ್ಧಕ್ಕರ್ಧ ಶಬ್ದಗಳು ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿಲ್ಲ, ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಶ ನುಗ್ಗಿಸಿ ಬರೀಬೇಕು. “ಬರಹವೆಂಬ ತಂತ್ರಾಂಶವನ್ನು ನಿಮ್ಮ ಗಣಕಯಂತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಟಾಪಿಸಿ” ತುಂಬಾ ವಿಚಿತ್ರವಾಗಿರುತ್ತೆ ಅಲ್ವಾ. ತುಂಬಾ ಆಂಗ್ಲ ಪದಗಳು ಬಂದರೊ ಬೇಜಾರು. ಕಡಿಮೆ ಬರೆದ್ರೆ ಏನು ಬರ್ದಿದ್ದಾನೇಂತ ಅರ್ಥವಾಗಲ್ಲ.

ಸಧ್ಯಕ್ಕೇ ಒಂದು ಬ್ಲಾಗು ನೋಡ್ದೆ. “ಬೊಗಳೆ ರಗಳೆ” ಅಂತ (ಬ್ಲಾಗಳೆ ರಗಳೆ ಇರ್ಬೇಕು ). ಒಂದು ಅದ್ಭುತವಾದ blogroll maintain ಮಾದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಏಲ್ಲರನ್ನೊ subscribe ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡ್ಬಿಟ್ಟೇ. ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದುವುದಂತೂ ಹಣೆಬರಹದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದಿಲ್ಲ, ಬ್ಲಾಗಾದ್ರೂ ಓದೋಣ.

ಯಾರಾದ್ರೂ “ಬ್ಲಾಗು” ಶಬ್ದಕ್ಕೇ ಓಂದು ಕನ್ನಡ ಹೆಸರು ಹುಡುಕೀಪ್ಪಾ. ಕಟ್ಟೆ ಪುರಾಣಾನೊ, ಹರಟೆನೋ ಏನಾದ್ರೂ ಸರಿ. ಈ ಬ್ಲಾಗ್ನ “ಬ್ಲಾಗು” ಅಂತ ಬರೇಯುವುದೋ “ಬ್ಲೋಗು” ಅಂತ ಬರೇಯುವುದೋ ಎಂಬುದೇ ಓಂದು ತಲೆಬಿಸಿ.

To agree with Amitabh Bachchan English is very Phunny (or funny) language. A language which has greatest number of literature works happening (or happened) has serious scarcity of generalized language rules, e.g. how to spell a sound or how to pronounce a word. There can half a dozen different ways to pronounce one sound. Similarly it has half a dozen different spellings for a word which is pronounced uniquely.

Trouble comes when one needs to write on Indian word in English (karma, nirvana, guru, pundit etc) and otherwise also. I have encountered three names written in three different spellings but pronounced the same. Sandhya , Sandya , Santhya, Santhiya.. Which one is correct? Technically going, none of them. No combination of English alphabet can accommodate these kinds of thousand words (except otherwise UNICODE). Its English, you can spell your name the way you want, where is the problem? Problem is the attitude of “you way of spelling is not correct”.

In one way these differences are very useful, to guess where that is person is from. If a girl writes her name as Sandhya, she is south Indian. If Sandya , she is north Indian. Any “th” ( like “Santhya” or “Santhiya” ) is either from Tamilnadu or Kerala and north-east people don’t name their name daughter as “sandya”. Cool isn’t it ?

Anyways come to the point. To go technically, South Indians pick letters as exactly it sounds in alphabetical chart, north Indians pick it from English words where they are used. For example letter “t” sounds retroflex in alphabetical chart , in English words it can be dental , or retroflex.

So “Bindhu” in south is “Bindu” in north, “Prashanth” in south is “Prashant” in north. ( What is dental what is retroflex , please refer the chart below ). So who is right ? No one. None of these are not following any standards, then where is the question of who is correct ?

English do have these have rules, but with around million exceptional cases. Sarcastically no one has any trouble memorizing all those exceptional cases. During school education I remember we students had a discussion among us to use “phonetic symbols “write English.

Indian languages are of course not flawless, but surly free from above two problems. In other words (to repeat) if a person knows all (around 52) symbols of an Indian languages (any of them which has a script), he can read whatever written (exactly the way it suppose to sound) without even knowing what is written. Basically this is the feature of every one’s grandmother Sanskrit.

Hi, I was wondering what to write next in my blog, since a while. Thought I will post some scribbles of mine, any way I own it… Don’t I? No office and work, they gave three days are there to sleep. Along comes laziness. Anyways, just finished my hibernation…

There comes the first questions what to write? “Suddam Husain reaches heaven …” nope… its there in all feeds …!!! “South Africans strip Dravid’s gang…”… Hmm… No again. There is nothing new in it. You don’t need to be Nostradamus to predict India to lose a game.

OK let’s write a movie review. (Priya keep telling me “abe ullu ke patte… Quit your company and keep writing movie reviews. That’s only thing in this world you do correctly). But, No movies gets released in Chennai which I can understand.

Alright, chuck it…!! Let’s rock the city. Oops, but… There’s no place I can find a place to sit calmly in Chennai. Beaches are like “Kumbh mela”.., the things left here are temples… but if I go, my mom will be shocked. Last time she predicted one more Tsunami when I did it. This is the way I spend my weekends. There always will be a complaint, If I have a long leave (and also if I do get it)

ನಾನೂ high school ಹೋಗಿದ್ದೆ, ಎಲ್ಲರಂತೆ. ಅದೊಂದು ಹಳ್ಳಿ ಬಾಳಿಲ ಎಂದು. ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಜನಾವಾಸದಿಂದ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ದೂರ. ಅಲ್ಲಿಂದಲ್ಲೇ ನನ್ನ ಈಗಿನ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಹುಚ್ಚನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದು. ಕೈಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕ ಪುಟವನ್ನು ಓದುವುದು, ಏನಾದರೂ ಗೀಚುತ್ತಾ ಇರುವುದು etc.etc. ಎಲ್ಲ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರೂ creativity ( ಸೃಜನ ಶೀಲಾತೆಗೆ ) ಗೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಒತ್ತು ಕೊಡುತಿದ್ದರು.

ನಾನೂ ನನ್ನ ಚೆಡ್ದಿ ದೋಸ್ತು ಮಂಜು ಮತ್ತು ಕೆಲವರು ವಿಪರೀತ ಪ್ರಸಂಗೀಗಳು ( ಇದು ಅಧಿಕ ಪ್ರಸಂಗೀ ಗಿಂತಲೂ ಮೇಲೂ ). ಒಬ್ಬರ ಮೇಲೊಬ್ಬರು ಹಟ ಹಿಡಿದು ಓದುತ್ತಿದೆವು. ಪಾಟ ಅಲ್ಲ , ಆದೇ ಕೈಗೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು. ಶಲ್ಲ ಗ್ರಂಥಾಲಯದ ಎಲ್ಲ ಒಳ್ಳೇ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳು ಮೂರು ವರ್ಷಗಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಿ ಮುಗಿಸಿ ಬಿಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೆವು. ಅದರ ಮೇಲೆ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಿಗಳ ಮನೆಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ತರುತಿದ್ದೆವು. ಆಗ ಓದಿದ್ದೆ ಕೊನೇ . ಅದರ ನಂತರ ಕನ್ನಡ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಓದುವ ಅವಕಾಶ್ ಸಿಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವೊಂದು ಇನ್ನೂ ಮನಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಉಳಿದಿವೆ ..

ಕೆಲವು ಬರೆದಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಉಳಿದದ್ದು ನೆನಪಾಗುತಿಲ್ಲ.

        November 1st this year four of south Indian states celebrated their birth. (In fact, it is for almost all the states in India). HDK, chief minister of Karnataka had a gift to distribute to all Kannadigas. Major cities in Karnataka changed their names. Bangalore ( to Bengalooru ) Mysore ( to Mysooru ) , Mangalore ( to Mangalooru ) , Hubli ( to Hubballi ) , Shimoga to ( Shivamogga ) , Belgam ( to Belagavi ) , Hospet ( to Hosapete ), Bellary ( to Ballary) and Gulbarga ( to Kalburgi ) . These changes were hinted long back, now it is official. Now lot of people seems to be irritated. Looks like general psyche of people. When Madras became Chennai , Bombay became Mumbai nobody bothered, what actual problem is Bangalore has changed the spellings ( another example When Afzal ( a terrorist ) was sentenced death, everyone has problem with such a punishment, when priyadarshini’s murderer is getting the same sentence nobody seems to have time to write about it )

             If you observe the names, they are not changed (except Kalburgi) to a completely new word. They have changed the way how it supposed to be spelt0 in it, in English. The new names (rather spellings) are very near to what people pronounce it, locally. Almost all languages spell what they pronounce, and read the way it is written. There will be a general rule how to spell and pronounce, unless English (where there are rules for every word, and every word is exception for rules of spelling). For example there is a beach city in coastal Karnataka, which is getting spelt as “KAUP”. Now how are we suppose to pronounce it? (Local pronounces it as “kapu”).

Tamil Nadu

In Chennai, Karunanidhi announced a hike in pensions for those who fought for inclusion of border areas in the State from Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000 and to families of these martyrs, from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000.

Somebody help me understanding who are these “ freedom fighters”, what did they fight for? Do we neet fight for all the borders inside our nation ? like village border , town border etc.

He, however, said demarcation of Tamil Nadu as a linguistic State had actually not benefited the State as it had lost most of its natural resources to its neighbours.

ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ
ಇನ್ನೊಬ್ಬ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗ blogosphear ನಲ್ಲಿ. ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯಬೇಕೆಂದು ಎಲಾ circus ಮಾಡಿ , ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಈ ಲಿಂಕ್ ಸಿಕ್ತು. ಇದು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ unicode follow ಮಾಡದಿದ್ರೂ ಬರೆಯುವುದು ಸೊಲ್ಪಾ ಸುಲಭ ( ಬರಹ software ಗೆ compare ಮಾಡಿದೆರೆ ). ತೊಂದರೆ ಈನೆಂದರೆ ಸರಿಯಾದ ಶಬ್ದ , ವಾಕ್ಯ ಬರೆಯಬೇಕಾದರೆ preview window ನೋಡದೇ ಬರೆಯುವುದು ಸಾಧ್ಯವೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. “ಬರಹ” ದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಗೇನಿಲ್ಲ. ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಕನ್ನಡ ಅಕ್ಷರಗಳಿಗೆ ಒಂದೊಂದು combination of keys, ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಕನ್ನಡ unicode ಗೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಹತ್ತಿರ.

ಅದೆಲ್ಲ ಬಿಡಿ . ನನ್ನ ಹೆಸ್ರು ಬಾಚ್ ಅಂತ college ನಲ್ಲಿ ನನ್ನ ಗೆಳೆಯರು ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಹೆಸರದು. ಬಾಲ್ಯದಿಂದ ಹತ್ತನೆ ತರಗತಿಯ ತನಕ ಕನ್ನಡ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಿದ್ರೂ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯುವ ಪ್ರಮೇಯ ಅದರ ನಂತರ ಬಂದಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಓದುವುದಂತೂ ಬಿಡಿ, high school ತನಕ ಏನು ಕಾರಂತ , ತೇಜಸ್ವಿ ಭೈರಪ್ಪ ಅಂತ ಓಡಿದ್ನೋ ಅದೇ ಲಾಭ. ಸಮಯ ಎಲ್ಲಿದೆ ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ? ಕಳೆದ ಮೂರು ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಂದ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಮಾತನಾಡಲೂ ಯಾರು ಸಿಕ್ತ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿಗೆ ಯಾವಾಗಲೋ ಬಂದಾಗ ಅಂಗಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ” ಎಷ್ಟು ” ಅಂತ ಕೇಳೋ ಬದಲು ” ಎವಳ” ಅಂತ ಕೇಳ್ತೀನಿ. ಇಂತಹುದೆ ಕಾರಣಗಳಿಗೆ ಇಷ್ಟೊಂದು ಕೆಟ್ಟ ವ್ಯಾಕರಣ , ಇಷ್ಟೊಂದು ಆಂಗ್ಲ ಶಬ್ದಗಳು ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ವ್ಯಾಕ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ.

ಯಾರಾದ್ರೂ ಕನ್ನದಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಬಲ್ಲವರು ಈ ಪುಟಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದರೆ , ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು ಒಂದು ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ ಹಾಕಿ ( ಕೆಳಗೆ comment ನಲ್ಲಿ ) . ಅಕ್ಕ ಪಕ್ಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾರು ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೂ , virtual ಪ್ರಪಂಚದಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಗೆಳೆಯರಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬಹುದಲ್ಲ…. !!!

This post is coming up with quite delay. I am writing after everything is burned and calmed down. Ask me what where you doing while Rome was burning. I was with my violin.
I don’t know places in Bangalore. I never stayed in bang lore, never more than two days. But something is there in Bangalore which fascinates me. The place, the culture, people and food etc some to list. The cool and calm was there till one nice guy departed. Then comes the riots, the loot for a day and night. Now every one is pointing out Banglorians, localities and the kannadigas. One guy wrote “bloody kannadigas” and some “lunatics” and, friend of mine told the blind worship is never to be seen anywhere in India but south. Do you really think whatever really happened is because of raj..?? I don’t buy it. A nice person, who never contested an election, never asked people to vote for some one, and his death will cause a riot..??
I see there nothing to protest and loot in the name of him, there is some other reason. The frustration! It’s because there are more than 70% of the populations now is non-kannadigas. Who came there after listening melodies story that ” Bangalore is one great place”. Less pollution, smaller slums, great weather etc. etc. They came to take, not give. Most of them simply refuse to adapt the culture. Instead complain. They complain infrastructure in not well (must be comparing with Singapore). There is a bigger gap now between who were there and who came there. Now answer these questions.
How many of the S/w engineers/ITES or students, people came there staying more than two years can’t be able to frame a single sentence in Kannada. While that is greatly achieved in neighboring Chennai. Complain they localities don’t talk Hindi.
How many of the non- kannadigas took an initiative the solve any of the city problems, rather than cribbing or forwarding mails about the pot holes. The city provides your daily bread.
Hooligans are there everywhere. They will come to a cricket match and throw bottle, they will burn some ATM in Hbad for some cartoonist in Denmark, in Delhi for some politician resignation, in Chennai in a flood relief queue, in France, in Nepal, in Fiji where they are not there. So what’s a big deal if it happened in your own Bangalore? It’s just another city

There was always confusion in me how to spell most of the Indian names in English. You’ll get to see lot of versions of spelling, but pronounced the same. The same issue I recalled when I read this article in my friend’s blog kaushik : My mother tongue isn’t perfect.

We have heard of people telling Sanskrit is perfect. Some of us might also have received forwarded mails telling that Kannada or Telugu is 99.99% perfect. Or what is that tells a language is perfect and or imperfect? There are many criteria. One of which everyone can easily see and comprehend is “what we write should be what we spell. English, as we all know doesn’t come into this group. But what about our own mother tongues?

Here is a question again, what do you call a perfect language. And how this percentage is calculated. There has to be a measure to do it isn’t it..?? Let’s take according to me these are the rules for a perfect language.

1. You shall be able to pronounce all the things you have written. And you shall be able to write whatever you pronounce. Also, there has to be only one way to write a sound and there has to be only one way to pronounce a symbol written. : In this case we can’t nominate English at all. And most of the Indian languages are perfect Sanskrit, Telugu and Kannada (even German) for example. All these nominees are completely capable to read and write all the words of its own languages (there will be a problem if you bring a foreign language, there will be some other sounds).
2. If you give a person the singular and plural has to be defined, not more not less. Kannada and Telugu are good. Sanskrit is troublesome here. (It has Dvi-Vachana…, why not thrivachana, chaturvachana etc.??)
3. Given a verb you should have a defined way of conjugate it. No language has a problem except English.
4. Gender. Why do you ask a learner to have gender for entities..?? (For example: I am a masculine, and my mind is neutral in Sanskrit. Very similar with Hindi, and German) Kannada, Telugu… even English pass the test here.
   Etc… Etc… According to my definition no language is perfect, where I define the perfect language as easiest for a person to learn for read and write. But about English. it is very true ..It is far from perfection

When a language likes Kannada or Telugu which is derived from a perfect language, why isn’t it perfect?Kannada and Telugu are not derived from Sanskrit. It’s just that there is high penetration of Sanskrit words in those two. I don’t know Telugu, but Kannada can be spoken without Sanskrit works in it (or may be with minimum usages), it does have its own Sandi and its own Samasa. But only that will look poetic. As for as the grammar yes, it is complete Sanskrit as it is.Many have a wrong presumption that Sanskrit doesn’t have a script. Actually Hindi doesn’t have one. Hindi uses Devanagari script which was used for Sanskrit. Oh! Our National Language has no script of its own?Yes this is very much true. There are many languages which lend things to Sanskrit, then argue it’s their own… I never had a problem with the script argument, but chances are there to some one argue that. But see this one is interesting… many a times I got a preaching that “MANN” is heart. I say its “mind”. I get a strong opposition; I prefer to keep my mouth shut.Got any inkling? How come ‘gum’ becomes ‘gun’? Ideally it should have been ‘gumga’ isn’t it? Isn’t there something fishy? Now check this out too…

This is a nice example. But there is a grammatically correct answer for this. For the answer let’s take alphabetical system. Indian languages have beautiful arrangement of classified consonants. There are tabulated in five rows and five columns. Starting from sound “k” to “m”. The columns are “unaspirated voiceless” “unaspirated voiceless” “unaspirated voiced” “aspirated voiced” and “nasal”. the rows are velar ( k kh a gh gn) palatal ( ch Ch j Jh jn) retroflex( T Th D Dh Nh) apcio dental (t th d dh n) and labial ( p ph b bh m). This is most scientifically organized according to sounds and pronunciations .note that this is my own convention of software, not UNICODE stationer.

Now come to the point. I don’t know Telugu, and I never learned Hindi grammar as coerce. But I can tell the rules of Kannada and Sanskrit. The rule says ” you can always (while writing) replace an “O”(symbol in Kannada, Telugu, in Devanagari it is just a dot) i.e. answer symbol by the last corresponding column of the consonants table, of the preceding consonant” did you get it. ..?? Let’s take the very example. “Ganga” is officially allowed to write using both the forms it is presented in Devanagari. An “O”(in Kannada and Telugu, Devanagari it is just a dot) has to be replaced now, you can replace it by a symbol “gn”, refer consonant table. What is Nasal sound for sound ‘g’ … replaces it with the answer? As for as I remember using the nasal is the correct form of writing. And “O” is the short cut. But I am sorry I am not sure about this information, which came first. But both are very much valid in Kannada, Kannada words and all the languages which use Devanagari script. There is no problem at all!!And by the way, I forgot to write my original topic… the problem in spelling my name in English… I will post it some other time.
